Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has joined a growing number of prominent Ghanaian leaders and institutional heads in pledging their commitment to the fight against corruption.
Dr Bawumia, speaking as part of the Pledge Against Corruption campaign, described corruption as a major threat to the well-being of vulnerable and marginalised people in society.
“Corruption is an act that steals resources that could have otherwise been used to improve the well-being of the poor, the vulnerable, and the excluded in our society,” he said.
According to Dr Bawumia, the fight against corruption requires individuals to place greater value on integrity and the impact of their actions rather than the wealth and possessions they accumulate.
He urged Ghanaians to remember that material possessions do not follow individuals beyond their lifetime.
“Let’s be reminded that you cannot leave the world with riches, assets, or wealth. When you leave this world, you only leave with your deeds and your integrity,” he added.
Dr Bawumia is among several prominent Ghanaians who have taken the anti-corruption pledge, committing themselves to promoting integrity and supporting efforts to curb corruption.
The campaign emphasises that corruption goes beyond the loss of public funds, stressing that it undermines development, weakens public institutions and ultimately harms citizens who depend on public resources and services.
The Pledge Against Corruption is a civil society-led initiative designed to encourage Ghanaians to make a personal commitment to integrity and contribute to the fight against corruption.
- The campaign is led by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) and Transparency International Ghana (TI-Ghana), with funding support from UK International Development.
