Tensions flared in Tamale Metropolis after a violent attack on Volta River Authority (VRA) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) staff on July 30, 2025. Disgruntled youth, upset over internal staff reassignments, allegedly assaulted workers, leaving several severely beaten and seizing three official vehicles, which were taken to the Gukpe Naa’s palace, as reported by JoyNews.
The VRA Senior Staff Association’s National Executive Council (NEC) condemned the assault, criticizing the Ghana Police Service for failing to make arrests despite a formal complaint. The unrest stems from the reassignment of a Human Resources Director to the Corporate Strategy Department, which the director claimed was an ethnically motivated demotion, petitioning the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II.
The NEC dismissed these allegations as “complete lies,” asserting that reassignments are routine and not driven by ethnic bias. The controversy has fueled public backlash, with claims of favoritism in hiring practices adding to the Tamale staff assault dispute.
The VRA and NEDCo demand justice as investigations continue. Stay updated on the Tamale staff assault case and efforts to restore calm!
