The Western Regional Marine Police Command has launched a coordinated search for a missing fishing canoe, Second Chance, and its seven crew members after the vessel failed to return from a fishing expedition offshore Axim.
The canoe reportedly departed the Sekondi Fishing Harbour on October 9, 2026, but has not been heard from since. Its owner, Nana Kweku Atta, formally reported the disappearance at the Fishing Harbour Police Station in Sekondi on October 18, nine days after the vessel set off.
According to a statement from the Western Regional Police Command, preliminary investigations have been unable to establish contact with the crew despite repeated attempts.
The statement indicated that emerging information suggested the canoe might have suffered engine failure, potentially leaving it adrift towards Tema and the Volta coast. However, authorities have yet to confirm the vessel’s last known position.
Security agencies intensify search efforts
The Marine Police Command is working with the Ghana Navy, Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Fisheries Commission and fishing communities to establish the canoe’s last known location and determine the whereabouts of the missing crew.
The Western Naval Command, relevant coastal police stations, chief fishermen and the Eastern Naval Command in Tema have also been alerted to support the search operation.
Authorities are relying on information from coastal communities and maritime stakeholders to help trace the missing vessel and its occupants.
Police appeal for public assistance
The police have urged fishing communities and other persons along the coast to promptly report any sightings of Second Chance or information that could assist in locating the canoe and its seven crew members.
Members of the public with relevant information are encouraged to report to the nearest police station to support ongoing efforts to locate the missing fishermen.
The statement was signed by Chief Superintendent of Police Olivia Et Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Western Regional Police Command.
The circumstances surrounding the canoe’s disappearance remain unclear as the search continues.
