Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has dismissed rumours suggesting he is preparing to take over as the next Minority Leader in Parliament.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Monday, November 17, 2025, Boamah described the speculation as surprising, insisting that he shares a long-standing and deeply cordial relationship with the current Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
“There is nobody in Parliament who knows Afenyo-Markin more than I do. We’ve been friends for years and we’re still very close. We share ideas all the time,” he said.
Boamah recalled standing firmly behind Afenyo-Markin during previous attempts by some members to remove him in the 9th Parliament, noting that leadership changes at the time would have destabilised the party.
“I defended him when attempts were made to unseat him. We were grooming young leaders in the party, and at that time, he hadn’t even served a full year as Majority Leader before we lost the election,” he added.
“I’m Not Interested in the Minority Leader Position”
The Okaikwei Central MP emphasised that his focus is on helping the New Patriotic Party (NPP) rebuild and regain political control — not chasing leadership positions.
“I’m not interested in the Minority Leader role. We need to be strategic. What we discuss internally shouldn’t be discussed outside. It doesn’t help unity,” he cautioned.
Boamah stressed that maintaining unity within the caucus and its committees is crucial as the NPP works to reposition itself for a comeback.
On Presidential Ambitions
When asked whether he harbours presidential ambitions, Boamah neither confirmed nor ruled out the possibility.
“God has His time for everything. I am qualified to run for the presidential primaries, but everything must happen at the right time,” he said.
For now, his priority is clear — helping to reorganise and strengthen the NPP, while pushing forward policies he believes can move Ghana in the right direction.
“We’re working on fixing the party. We believe we have strong policies that can help the country,” he concluded.
