By God’s Grace Mahama Has Admitted Covid-19 Impacted Ghana’s Economy – Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama’s admission that the Covid-19 pandemic negatively affected Ghana’s economy, describing it as “by the grace of God.”

The impact of Covid-19 was a central issue during the 2024 election campaign, with the two major political parties sharply divided. The then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) argued that the pandemic triggered revenue shortfalls, market uncertainty, and inflationary pressures, leading to a rising cost of living. In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Mr. Mahama, denied those claims, insisting the challenges were the result of poor economic management.

However, speaking at a side event of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, President Mahama acknowledged the devastating effect of the pandemic:

“The Covid-19 pandemic erased two decades of poverty reduction in less than two years,” he said.

Reacting during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said the President’s new stance proves the NPP’s position was right all along.

“From 2022, when the pandemic struck, prices of goods went up. During the 2024 elections, we explained that the high cost of living was largely due to Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. But President Mahama and the NDC said we were lying.”

Dr. Bawumia added:

“They claimed Covid-19 had no impact and that it was purely mismanagement. But now President Mahama himself has admitted in New York that Covid-19 significantly affected economies and reversed years of poverty reduction efforts.”

He concluded:

“The President knew the truth but did not say it during the campaign. By the grace of God, he has now spoken the truth—and by God’s grace, the people of Ghana will see the truth.”
