Kennedy Agyapong: Ghana’s future cannot start with IMF negotiations

NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has strongly criticized the idea that Ghana’s economic progress should begin with talks at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), saying such an approach shows weak leadership and failed policies.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on September 6, the former Assin Central MP said Ghana must stop relying on IMF bailouts and instead focus on building a resilient economy.

“You want to lead Ghana, yet your main concern is who can negotiate best with the IMF? Let me be clear: If your vision for Ghana starts with a trip to the IMF, you have already failed,” he wrote.

Mr. Agyapong outlined his vision of creating an economy that thrives without external support.

“My vision is to build an economy so self-reliant and powerful that the IMF becomes irrelevant,” he added.

His comments, widely seen as a swipe at his rivals within the NPP, come just months before the party’s flagbearer elections ahead of the 2028 general elections.

One of his main competitors is Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has been leading the Economic Management Team during Ghana’s ongoing IMF programme.

Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign message has focused on:

  • Boosting domestic investment
  • Creating jobs through manufacturing
  • Promoting fiscal discipline to reduce borrowing

He insists that with the right leadership, Ghana can break free from dependency on external lenders and chart its own sustainable economic path.
