Let’s begin discussions on comprehensive healthcare support programme – Bagbin to MPs

Speaker Alban Bagbin has called for a comprehensive healthcare support scheme for Ghanaian MPs due to the intense demands of parliamentary work, as stated during the closing ceremony of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament in Accra, read by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor. The demanding schedule, with sessions sometimes lasting over 10 hours, as seen during the Ghana Goldboard Bill’s passage in March 2025, has raised health concerns, per Graphic Online.

The recent death of Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025, from heart failure underscores the urgency, with high blood pressure and heart issues linked to recent MP deaths. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin urged MPs to prioritize medical check-ups during the recess. Bagbin also praised the 43 sittings over 10 weeks, where eight bills, including the Social Protection Bill 2025, were passed, per Ghana Parliament.
