Samuel Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has issued a firm ultimatum to DStv Ghana, warning that its broadcasting licence may be suspended by Wednesday, August 7, 2025, if it fails to reduce subscription prices in compliance with regulatory expectations.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, the Minister revealed that he had formally written to the National Communications Authority (NCA), instructing the body to initiate suspension procedures should DStv continue to defy calls for pricing reforms.
“I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DStv has not complied, their broadcasting licence will be suspended,” George stated emphatically.
According to the Minister, DStv’s justification for maintaining its current pricing is tied to macroeconomic conditions. In a recent letter, the company cited that the Ghanaian cedi had depreciated by over 200% in the past eight years, limiting their ability to adjust subscription fees downward.
However, Sam George dismissed the explanation as insufficient.
“Ghanaians have been subjected to unfair pricing models for years. My fidelity lies with the Ghanaian people,” he said.
“We will not allow foreign service providers to exploit our citizens under the guise of economic pressures.”
This bold move is part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry to ensure fair digital services and protect consumers in the Ghanaian media landscape.
