NPP Flagbearer Election Underway in High-Stakes Presidential Primaries

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is today, Saturday, January 31, conducting its presidential primaries to elect a flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections, in what party officials describe as one of the most significant internal contests in the party’s history.

Voting is currently ongoing nationwide, with 211,849 accredited delegates expected to cast their ballots across all 16 regions, at the party’s national headquarters, and in selected diaspora voting centres. The exercise is being conducted under tight security and strict electoral guidelines.

The primaries follow months of intensive campaigning, policy engagements and regional tours by the aspirants, and are widely seen as a major test of the NPP’s internal cohesion as it prepares for the next national polls.

Five candidates are vying for the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 elections. They are Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

Polling is taking place peacefully across the country, with personnel from the Ghana Police Service deployed to all voting centres to maintain law and order. The Electoral Commission is also providing oversight to ensure compliance with electoral procedures.

Party leadership has repeatedly urged delegates and supporters to uphold the NPP’s core principles of discipline, unity and peaceful competition, while strictly enforcing the party’s ban on vigilantes and the use of private security groups.

The delegate register comprises representatives from constituency, regional and national party structures, party elders, and recognised external branches. Adjustments were made to the list to account for deceased members and forfeitures.

Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions form the largest voting blocs, followed by the Eastern, Central and Western Regions, with analysts indicating that outcomes in these areas could significantly influence the final result.

Voting is expected to close later this afternoon, after which counting will take place at the various centres before results are transmitted to the party’s national collation centre.

The winner of the contest will face the immediate responsibility of uniting the party, addressing internal divisions and presenting a compelling national vision ahead of the 2028 general elections.
