Totobi Quakyi Celebrates His 70th Birthday by Supporting Sekondi School for the Deaf with a GH₵50,000 Donation

Kofi Totobi Quakyi, a former Minister for Information and the Chairman of Ghana Gas, celebrated his 70th birthday in a meaningful way by donating funds and essential supplies to the Sekondi School for the Deaf, one of Ghana’s oldest institutions for children with hearing impairments.

On Saturday, December 6, Mr. Quakyi visited the school and donated GH₵50,000, an industrial photocopier, boxes of A4 paper, and a corn milling machine. These contributions will enhance the school’s daily operations and improve the learning environment for students.

The Sekondi School for the Deaf was founded in October 1971 and has been educating children with hearing difficulties for over fifty years. However, the school continues to face challenges, including a lack of resources, aging facilities, and low morale among teachers.

While addressing the teachers, students, and guests, Mr. Quakyi emphasized that his support would not be limited to a single donation. “We have brought GH₵50,000 to support the school. This is not a one-time effort; we will return to assist you again. I am committed to supporting you,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the teachers for their invaluable work.

His donation inspired others to get involved as well. The Chief Executive Officers of Justmor Construction and Ghana Gas announced their intention to “adopt” the school and provide ongoing support based on its needs. The Member of Parliament for Shama, Hon. Emelia Arthur, assured the school that she would ensure timely delivery of government funds.

Regina Essilfie, the headmistress of the school, expressed her profound gratitude for the donation. She noted that the new corn milling machine would ease the workload for the kitchen staff and reduce health risks associated with manual food preparation.

His generous actions demonstrate how compassionate leadership can make a significant positive impact on society.
