Political Scientist and Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has observed that the outcome of the Akwatia by-election reflects a significant surge in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) goodwill.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante described the by-election as a crucial test for both the NDC and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“This election hinged on two things,” he explained. “The resilience of the NPP and the perceived decline of the NDC’s goodwill. What we saw, however, is that the NDC’s goodwill is rising at an impressive pace, while that of the NPP appears to be diminishing.”
He stressed that the results should serve as a wake-up call for the NPP, urging them to reorganise.
“It gives them serious homework. They must put their house in order if they want to remain competitive and fight head-on,” he advised.
Dr Asah-Asante further highlighted Akwatia’s status as a swing constituency, noting that outcomes there are often unpredictable.
“Ordinarily, one would have expected the NPP to have an advantage. But events took a different turn, and the outcome proved otherwise,” he explained.
While acknowledging the NPP’s decline in performance, Dr Asah-Asante cautioned against writing them off entirely.
“Yes, their numbers are dropping, but the NPP remains a force to reckon with in Parliament. They must, however, sit up and work harder,” he added.
