Antoine Semenyo nets brace against Liverpool amid racial abuse incident

Antoine Semenyo began his Premier League season in style with two goals against reigning champions Liverpool at Anfield on Friday night, despite Bournemouth falling to a 4-2 defeat.

The match was momentarily paused in the first half after the Ghanaian forward reported being subjected to racial abuse from the stands. The incident took place around the 30th minute as Semenyo prepared to take a throw-in. Referee Anthony Taylor was informed, subsequently consulting both team captains and coaches before play resumed. According to Sky Sports, a supporter was ejected from the stadium in connection with the abuse.

Liverpool broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Hugo Ekitike capitalised on a fortunate deflection to score his first Premier League goal. Four minutes after the restart, Ekitike turned provider, setting up Cody Gakpo to double the Reds’ advantage.

Bournemouth clawed their way back through Semenyo, who struck in the 64th minute from a David Brooks assist. The Ghana international then produced a sensational solo effort 12 minutes later, surging from his own half before firing past goalkeeper Alisson to level the score.

Liverpool, however, reasserted control late in the contest. Substitute Federico Chiesa restored their lead in the 88th minute, before Mohamed Salah sealed victory deep into stoppage time.
