UEFA Champions League: One stat from each of the round of 16 second legs

Sixteen have become eight in the UEFA Champions League, as the round of 16 deciders took place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Now that the dust has settled, here is a stat from each of the return matches.

22 – Barcelona saw off Benfica to kick off Tuesday’s action. The five-time winners prevailed 3-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate to make the quarter-finals for the second year running. The victory was also Barca’s 22nd over Portuguese opposition (22-5-7). They have now won their last four games.

2 – Paris Saint-Germain also moved on in an incredibly dramatic tie at the expense of Liverpool. The Ligue 1 champions scored early on to tie the aggregate score at one apiece, with penalties being required to decide who would advance. Scoring all four of their spot kicks, PSG progress. For Liverpool, who fell 1-0 on the night, it is their second straight European knockout clash at home that they have lost. Atalanta beat them 3-0 in the Europa League last eight a year ago.

– Inter Milan managed to get past Feyenoord as their 2-1 home win made the score 4-1 across the two legs. The Dutch club could not knock out the two Milan sides in consecutive rounds after all. However, the penalty scored by Jakub Moder ended a run of six successive continental home games where Inter kept a clean sheet. Before that, the last goal they conceded came against RB Salzburg on matchday 3 of last season’s group stage.

23 – Bayern Munich finished off Bayer Leverkusen with two second-half goals to grab a 2-0 victory on the road, and 5-0 aggregate score. The Bavarians are now in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the 23rd time. In the competition’s current guise, no side have more appearances at this than the six-time winners. It is also the sixth year in a row they are at the final eight.

12 – To Wednesday’s action, where Borussia Dortmund sparked a second-half comeback to oust Lille 2-1 on the road, and 3-2 overall. It allows Dortmund to reach the UCL quarter-finals in consecutive years for the first time since 2016/17. Their success also put an end to Lille’s 12-game unbeaten run in Europe, qualifiers included (10-2-0). The last side to be victorious against Les Dogues came at this stage of the tournament three years ago by Chelsea.

9 – Aston Villa continued their winning ways as they sent Club Brugge packing with a 3-0 win over the Belgians. A 6-1 aggregate score sees Villa make the last eight of the European Cup/Champions League for the third time. The result was also their ninth home win in the competition all-time. Overall, they own a record of 9-1-2 in such games.

5 – PSV made a good account for themselves in the return leg of their tie against Arsenal. Having lost 7-1 in their home leg, the Dutch club managed a 2-2 draw at the Emirates. Of course, the 9-3 score over two legs saw the Gunners advance. To make matters worse for PSV, they have failed to win any of their last five knockout round away games in Europe since a 4-0 beating of FC Kobenhavn at this round of the UEFA Conference League three years ago.
