Ukraine Targets Sochi Oil Depot, Russia Hits Mykolaiv Homes

A Ukrainian drone attack sparked a massive fire at an oil depot near Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi, prompting the suspension of flights at Sochi’s airport, according to Reuters. Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported on Telegram that drone debris hit a fuel tank, with 127 firefighters battling the blaze.

Concurrently, a Russian missile strike devastated homes and infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern city of Mykolaiv, injuring seven civilians, three of whom are hospitalized, per Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. Mykolaiv has faced repeated Russian shelling, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine launched multiple drone attacks over the weekend, targeting Russian cities like Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh, where four people were injured, as stated by the Voronezh governor via TASS. Russia’s defense ministry claimed it intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones, 60 over the Black Sea region. Ukraine’s air force reported Russia fired 83 drones and seven missiles, with 61 downed and 16 hitting targets across eight locations.

The attacks follow a deadly strike on Kyiv on July 31, 2025, killing 31 and marking one of the worst assaults since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, per BBC News. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger global sanctions, while U.S. President Donald Trump, via CNN, condemned Russia and hinted at new sanctions by August 8, 2025, after setting a tight deadline for Russia to end the war.
