Former Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, believes the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was driven more by politics than by genuine legal reasons.
Speaking on Prime Insights on Joy Prime, Abubakar explained that after reviewing the allegations and responses during the proceedings, she found little evidence that justified removing the Chief Justice.
According to her, the move was part of a political agenda rather than a legal necessity.
“The only justification is that they had promised to reset the judiciary — to remove certain people and replace them with their own. Since they won the elections with overwhelming support, they probably felt that Ghanaians wouldn’t strongly oppose such a decision,” she said on Saturday.
She added that the ruling government may have been confident that, given its electoral victory, even controversial steps would not attract much resistance from the public.
Abubakar stressed:
“If you look closely at the allegations and the responses, there was no real basis for removing the Chief Justice.”
Her comments come after President John Mahama, on September 1, 2025, approved the removal of Justice Torkornoo based on the recommendations of a committee set up under Article 146 of the Constitution.
