China has officially commissioned its most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, marking a major leap forward in its rapidly expanding naval power and intensifying competition with the United States.

According to state media reports, the Fujian entered active service just days after a grand commissioning ceremony personally overseen by President Xi Jinping in southern Hainan Province.

A Technological Milestone for China’s Navy

The Fujian is China’s third aircraft carrier and the first fully domestically built vessel equipped with electromagnetic catapult technology—a feature previously exclusive to the US Navy. This system allows fighter jets to be launched at higher speeds, carrying heavier fuel and weapons payloads, and striking targets from greater distances.

By contrast, China’s first two carriers — the Liaoning and the Shandong — were built using older Soviet designs and conventional launch systems.

Strategic Implications and Global Response

The introduction of the Fujian marks a defining moment in China’s quest to modernize its military under President Xi. Analysts say the move strengthens Beijing’s long-term goal of asserting dominance in regional waters, particularly across the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.

With the Fujian’s addition, China now commands the largest navy in the world by number of vessels, placing increasing pressure on the United States and its allies to maintain their technological and strategic edge.

Xi Jinping’s Direct Involvement

During the commissioning ceremony, President Xi reportedly toured the Fujian’s flight deck, receiving a briefing on the ship’s combat readiness and capabilities. State media claimed Xi personally approved the adoption of the electromagnetic catapult system, reflecting his hands-on role in advancing China’s defense modernization.

In a patriotic display, sailors stood in formation along the deck, saluting and chanting:

“Follow the Party’s command, fight to win, and uphold fine conduct!”

A New Era in Naval Power Projection

The Fujian’s advanced design allows it to launch multiple types of aircraft, including stealth fighters, early warning aircraft, and drones, positioning China’s navy as a formidable maritime force capable of long-range power projection.

Military experts describe the ship’s commissioning as a “symbolic and strategic milestone” — signaling Beijing’s growing ambition to rival American naval dominance across the Indo-Pacific.

The countdown to the end of the 2025 Formula 1 season is officially on. With eight consecutive flyaway races lined up to close out the calendar, all eyes now turn to Baku, Azerbaijan, where the city’s dramatic and unforgiving street circuit will stage Round 17 of the World Championship.

For fans around the world, and especially here at Almighty FM Sports, this weekend promises fireworks as McLaren teammates and title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris continue their thrilling battle for the Drivers’ Championship.

McLaren Rivalry Heats Up

The intra-team rivalry at McLaren has been one of the defining stories of the 2025 season. Oscar Piastri, in just his second full season, has emerged as a composed and consistent leader in the standings. Heading into Baku, the Australian holds a 31-point advantage over his British teammate Lando Norris.

That margin is slightly smaller than it was before the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. There, Norris delivered a stronger performance over the weekend, while Piastri struggled with setup challenges. McLaren, however, found themselves caught in late-race drama when a slow pit stop and team orders left Norris compromised. The incident not only stirred tension within the garage but also cost McLaren what could have been another victory.

Instead, the door was left open for Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who capitalized brilliantly to secure his first win since the mid-season break.

Verstappen Bounces Back

For Verstappen, Monza represented an important return to form. The three-time World Champion has endured an up-and-down 2025 campaign compared to his previous dominant years. Mechanical issues, strategy missteps, and even a rare driving error in Baku last year had cast doubt over his ability to consistently challenge McLaren this season.

Yet in Italy, Verstappen reminded everyone why he remains one of the most dangerous drivers on the grid. His calm recovery, coupled with McLaren’s struggles, handed Red Bull their fourth victory of the season. Now, as Formula 1 heads to Azerbaijan, Verstappen will be eager to build momentum and prove that he can still influence the title picture.

Memories of Baku

The Baku City Circuit is unlike any other on the calendar. With its high-speed straights, tight castle section, and unforgiving walls, the track is a blend of chaos and spectacle. It is often the scene of dramatic incidents, surprise results, and races that live long in the memory.

Last year, Baku was where Oscar Piastri underlined his arrival as a genuine front-runner. On that occasion, he defeated Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, a driver who had secured four consecutive pole positions at the circuit, to take only his second career victory. That result established Piastri as one to watch — and just a year later, he now leads the World Championship.

For Norris, Baku in 2024 was about recovery. Starting from 15th on the grid after yellow-flag interruptions ruined his qualifying session, he battled his way up to finish fourth. That drive showcased his grit and determination, qualities that will be vital if he is to claw back points in the championship fight this weekend.

The 2024 race ended under a Virtual Safety Car following a heavy collision between Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz while they fought for a podium finish. It was yet another reminder that Baku is rarely straightforward — and often delivers the unexpected.

The Title Picture

With eight races remaining, the battle between Piastri and Norris is finely poised. A 31-point gap is significant but far from insurmountable. In Formula 1, one race can turn the tide of an entire championship.

McLaren finds itself in a delicate position. On one hand, they have two drivers capable of winning races and pushing the team to new heights. On the other, managing the rivalry between Piastri and Norris has proven tricky. Team orders at Monza sparked tension, and how McLaren navigates this internal contest could determine whether they emerge as champions or let rivals like Red Bull and Ferrari sneak back into the picture.

Meanwhile, Verstappen lurks in third, still mathematically in contention. A strong showing in Baku could breathe new life into his campaign, particularly if McLaren falters again. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also remains a threat, especially given his one-lap pace at this circuit, though he has yet to convert a Baku pole into victory.

What to Expect in Baku

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has a reputation for unpredictability. Overtaking opportunities on the long main straight are plentiful, but the tight castle section leaves no room for error. Safety Cars and late-race drama are almost guaranteed.

For fans, that means anything can happen — and usually does. McLaren may enter as the favorites, but with Verstappen resurgent and Ferrari eager to spoil the party, nothing is certain. The only guarantee is that Baku will once again deliver drama.

Conclusion

As Formula 1 gears up for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the 2025 season enters a critical phase. For Oscar Piastri, it is a chance to extend his lead and edge closer to a maiden world title. For Lando Norris, it is an opportunity to strike back and reignite his challenge. For Max Verstappen, it is about proving that the champion’s spirit still burns brightly.

On a street circuit where history shows that fortunes can change in an instant, this weekend promises to be one of the most pivotal and unpredictable races of the year.

Stay locked to Almighty FM Sports for live updates, results, and analysis as the drama unfolds in Baku.

With nominations now officially open for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 flagbearer contest, one contender is rapidly emerging as the clear favourite — former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Over 200,000 NPP delegates, spanning polling station executives to top party leadership, will decide who leads the party into the 2028 general elections. Early indications suggest that most influential blocs are lining up behind Dr. Bawumia.

One of the most critical power bases, the party’s parliamentary caucus of 88 members, appears to be firmly in his corner. Sources reveal that about 62 NPP Members of Parliament are backing Dr. Bawumia, compared to eight for former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and seven for Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong. Nine MPs remain undecided.

Beyond Parliament, Dr. Bawumia commands strong support from over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who publicly endorsed him in July. He is also backed by a majority of the party’s regional and constituency executives.

Perhaps most telling is the overwhelming endorsement from the grassroots. In keeping with the NPP’s post-1996 tradition of retaining its previous presidential candidate, nearly 490 of the party’s 552 youth organisers — key drivers of mobilisation across all 275 constituencies — declared their support for Dr. Bawumia on August 12.

According to a senior party insider, while the race remains competitive, all signs point to major party blocs eventually consolidating behind Dr. Bawumia.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong have already collected their nomination forms, with Dr. Bawumia expected to follow suit soon.
