Ghana has no operational 5G internet service, despite claims of a rollout in 2024, according to Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on August 1, 2025, the Ningo-Prampram MP dismissed the high-profile 5G launch event as a “smokescreen,” revealing significant delays in the country’s 5G deployment.

Addressing the November 2024 launch at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, attended by former Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Sam George stated that no 5G network was active at the event or anywhere in Ghana. “There was no 5G network, and there’s no 5G anywhere,” he said, as reported by Pulse. The event had claimed 5G availability in cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.

The minister clarified that Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), Ghana’s exclusive 4G and 5G provider, has regulatory approvals to connect with mobile network operators (MNOs). However, he rejected NGIC’s request for an additional Internet Service Provider license, urging them to focus on existing permissions. “You have a license for almost three years. Roll out with MNOs,” he emphasized.

Sam George issued a stern ultimatum to NGIC, warning that failure to achieve full commercial 5G rollout by the end of 2025 could lead to contract termination and loss of exclusivity. This puts pressure on NGIC to deliver on its promise to bring 5G internet service to Ghana, addressing delays and ensuring connectivity advancements.
