Deputy National Elections Director of the NDC, Rashid Tanko Computer, has dismissed the apology issued by New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, following the NPP’s loss in the Akwatia by-election.

He insists Mr. Baafi must honour his earlier promise to resign or, at the very least, apologise publicly on the floor of Parliament.

“We are not accepting his apology. He must resign. If he doesn’t resign, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously. We must be held to our words. You can’t just make strong statements and then withdraw them within 24 hours,” Mr. Tanko Computer said.

Recounting the tense atmosphere during the collation, he described how Baafi’s confidence quickly evaporated when the results began trickling in.

“He walked in smiling, telling me they were winning until I showed him the results on my phone. That’s when he realised the NPP had lost. He started perspiring immediately,” he narrated.

According to him, Baafi’s categorical statement about resigning if the NPP lost must be taken seriously.

“The gentleman said it clearly: ‘I will resign’. Now, we must test their strength in that constituency and prove whether it is truly an NPP stronghold. We are going to hold him accountable,” Tanko Computer declared.

He further warned that the NDC would escalate the matter if Baafi failed to act.

“If he doesn’t resign, I will petition the Speaker of Parliament. He must be made to apologise on the floor for all Ghanaians to see. Politicians must respect their own words. Decency in our politics is non-negotiable.”
