The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for withdrawing from the Tamale Central by-election, describing the decision as one that promotes political stability.

Speaking during a visit by NPP leaders to the NDC national headquarters to express condolences over the recent helicopter crash, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah acknowledged the move as a positive gesture in a tense political climate.

“We thank you for withdrawing from contesting the Tamale Central by-election,” he said.

However, he stressed that the NDC remains fully committed to contesting and winning the upcoming Akwatia by-election in the Eastern Region, set for September 2.

“We wish to state that we shall contest the Akwatia by-election,” he reaffirmed, expressing confidence in the party’s chances of reclaiming the seat from the NPP.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah also expressed concern over growing threats of violence from political youth groups, warning that such behaviour could have serious consequences for Ghana’s democracy.

“What we must recognise is that all these threats from certain youth regarding the election will ultimately lead to consequences that we will all have to face,” he cautioned.

He called on both NDC and NPP leadership to take proactive measures to control their supporters and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

“Let us collectively take the necessary measures to ensure that peace is maintained,” he urged.

The Akwatia by-election follows the death of the sitting NPP Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, whose victory the NDC had previously challenged in court.
