Rooney described City’s dominant performance as one that would have sent “a chill down the spine of every Arsenal fan”, given how sharp Pep Guardiola’s men looked. But he also questioned — was City simply unstoppable, or did Liverpool fall short of their usual standards?

The trio also took time to praise Sunderland’s impressive league form, highlighting the leadership of captain Granit Xhaka, who Rooney believes could be “the signing of the season.” Drawing on his own experience as a captain, Rooney explained how seasoned leaders like Xhaka play a crucial role in guiding younger teammates through difficult matches.

They also tackled Jamie Carragher’s recent claim that the Premier League isn’t as competitive or entertaining as it once was — a statement Rooney strongly disagreed with, offering his own perspective on the league’s evolution.

The discussion didn’t stop there — the team analyzed Manchester United’s 2–2 draw with Tottenham, and Rooney shared his impressions from his visit to Everton’s new stadium, praising Jack Grealish’s consistency after another standout performance against Fulham.

London City Lionesses have wasted no time making their mark on the Women’s Super League (WSL). This summer alone, the club brought in 13 new signings, blending international experience with proven winners. Among them are England forward Nikita Parris, Netherlands star Danielle van de Donk, and Italian defender Elena Linari—three names that signal serious intent.

Another standout arrival is Jana Fernandez, the highly rated 23-year-old defender from Barcelona, further underlining the Lionesses’ growing pull in the European market.

For majority owner Michele Kang, this recruitment drive is more than squad strengthening—it’s a statement. Announcing Parris’ signing on X, the club declared: “We didn’t come to play.”

Head coach Sonia Bompastor’s successor, Precheur, now has a squad capable of competing in a league where survival and success are separated by the finest margins.

“These new players are essential for me on and off the pitch,” Precheur explained. “I’m very happy the club invested. With sporting director Markel Zubizarreta leading recruitment, we knew after the Birmingham game we needed to be stronger. We don’t want to repeat the same story as Bristol City or Crystal Palace. The gap between WSL2 and the WSL is huge.”

Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani also emphasized the importance of building a competitive culture:
“The biggest challenge is making this group play together. At the same time, we’re creating a culture of high standards, which wasn’t here when I arrived. Energy and talent are not enough—we need details, discipline, and the mentality of winners. That’s why experienced players like Nikita, Danielle, and Saki Kumagai are so crucial.”

With Kang’s investment, a strengthened backroom staff, and a roster brimming with international pedigree, the Lionesses now stand at the pinnacle of English women’s football.

But the defining question remains: can they survive their debut WSL season?

For Asllani, the answer is simple—and defiant:
“Yes. We’re a new team in the league, but not an inexperienced one. We have Champions League winners and players who’ve performed on the biggest international stages. And we are London City Lionesses—writing history, not preparing to go down.”

Ghanaian forward Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah has bid an emotional farewell to London City Lionesses after her two-year stint with the club came to an end.

A key member of Ghana’s Black Queens squad that clinched bronze at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Boye-Hlorkah departs following the expiration of her contract. She has signed a two-year deal with Women’s Super League 2 newcomers Nottingham Forest, aiming to help them secure top-flight promotion — just as she did with her former club.

In a heartfelt Instagram message, the 29-year-old expressed deep gratitude to the Lionesses for reigniting her football career.

“London City Lionesses… I DID MY JOB. Making history with this club and helping secure promotion to the WSL — I’m forever grateful,” she wrote.

She went on to thank her manager for the trust and belief, her teammates and staff for their acceptance and support, and the club’s growing fanbase for their love and respect.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t continue making memories with you. It was out of my hands. What I did will never be taken away, and my gratitude will last forever. Everything happens for a reason. I gave my heart to this badge & we won. I wish London City Lionesses nothing but the best in the future.”

As she embarks on her new chapter with Nottingham Forest, Boye-Hlorkah’s focus will be on replicating her promotion-winning success in the Women’s Super League 2.
