According to eyewitnesses, the victim was attempting to cross the busy highway when she was fatally struck by a long vehicle bearing registration number WR 1475-13. The driver, in an attempt to avoid a collision with vehicles that had stopped for pedestrians, veered off the main road — tragically crushing the woman who was standing on the median.

Eyewitness Account and Safety Concerns

One eyewitness, Lawrence, who spoke to Citi News, blamed the incident on the poor visibility and malfunctioning streetlights along the Mallam-Kasoa stretch.

“The woman didn’t see the truck because there’s no streetlight on this road, from Mallam Junction to Kasoa. The poles are there but they don’t work — they’ve become like white elephants,” Lawrence lamented.

This portion of the road has long been cited for safety risks due to the lack of functioning streetlights, poor pedestrian infrastructure, and high-speed vehicular traffic. Residents and commuters have persistently appealed to the Ghana Highway Authority and Ministry of Roads and Highways to install effective safety features, including pedestrian footbridges and lighting, to prevent such tragedies.

A Growing Road Safety Crisis

This fatality adds to the growing number of pedestrian-related accidents in Ghana, particularly on highways without safe crossing points. According to data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), a significant percentage of road deaths involve pedestrians.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement or confirm whether the truck driver is in police custody.
