According to Opemsuo Radio, the Agona royals — represented by Tepahene Nana Adusei Atwenewa Ampem — sought clemency for lawsuits their late uncle filed against the Asantehene nearly two decades ago.

These lawsuits, which spanned the High Court, Court of Appeal, and even the Supreme Court of Ghana, challenged the authority of the Golden Stool. Ultimately, the royals lost all cases.

The dispute originated from a probe initiated by the Asantehene, which found that the then-reigning Agona queen mother was not of royal lineage — a revelation that sparked years of tension and legal battles.

The Agona stool has remained vacant since the passing of Nana Frimpong Anokye Ababio in 2022. Now, the family seeks the king’s pardon to allow for a new chief to be enstooled.

Before the Asantehene gave his ruling, the Asanteman paramount chiefs debated the appeal. While some supported leniency, others opposed any forgiveness.

Juabenhene Nana Otuo Sereboe II, one of the influential chiefs, urged mercy, stating:

“They are descendants of Komfo Anokye. This is a spiritual issue. If we expel everyone who errs, how will Asante survive? The plea was brought through Tepa Barnie, another revered deity. Let’s punish them, but not disown them.”

However, another chief warned against creating a precedent that might embolden defiance of traditional authority:

“Where is the deterrent if we forgive them? You dragged the Asantehene to court. Why didn’t you caution your uncle? And why has it taken this long to apologise?”

The Asantehene, visibly angered, reportedly called the Agona royals “ingrates.” He recalled personally cautioning their uncle, Owusu Afriyie, against the consequences of his legal actions, which were ignored.

“I warned him. I told him, of all people, descendants of Komfo Anokye should know better. You all know how that ended.”

Further worsening their case, the Agona royals were accused of seizing the sacred Amoampong deity, which was denied to the current enstooled chief.

“You’re asking for forgiveness while withholding sacred property. Where is the remorse?” the king asked sternly.

He ordered the Tepahene to ensure the deity is returned promptly so that purification rites can be performed before their apology is even considered.
