Five young applicants have been injured following a stampede during the ongoing Ghana Armed Forces recruitment screening at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Confirming the incident, Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene expressed deep concern and assured the public that all injured individuals are receiving full medical attention at the government’s expense.
“I have directed that they receive the best possible medical care and full support to ensure their speedy recovery,” Dr. Amoakohene said in a Facebook post, adding that the government stands firmly with the affected families during this difficult time.
The tragedy follows a similar incident at El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, where six applicants lost their lives and several others were injured during a separate recruitment exercise.
Dr. Amoakohene admitted that there were lapses in crowd management and pledged reforms to prevent future occurrences.
“We deeply regret this incident and remain committed to ensuring that all future recruitment and screening exercises are conducted in a safe, orderly, and humane manner,” he stated.
In response to the growing public concern, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Armed Forces to suspend the nationwide recruitment exercise pending a full investigation into both incidents.
The government has extended its sympathies to all affected families as investigations continue.
