The Ghana Police Service has arrested a man captured in a widely circulated Facebook video violently assaulting a woman believed to be his wife at their home in Ofankor, Ga East. The arrest was confirmed in a statement released by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo on Tuesday, November 18.
According to the statement, the suspect, John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the family residence after the video sparked nationwide condemnation and demands for swift police action.
The CID also disclosed that two of Lamptey’s siblings, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, have been detained for allegedly confronting and attempting to assault a female tenant they suspected of filming and leaking the disturbing footage.
Police rescued the tenant during the operation and have since assured her of full protection. Meanwhile, officers say efforts are ongoing to locate and safeguard the victim of the assault, who reportedly fled the home out of fear before the police arrived.
“The Ghana Police Service remains committed to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators face the full rigour of the law,” the statement added.
The viral video has provoked intense public discussion, with many Ghanaians calling for stronger domestic violence interventions, improved victim protection mechanisms, and harsher punishment for abusers.
