The running mate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the 2024 presidential election, Wayoe Ghanamannti, has petitioned Parliament to initiate impeachment proceedings against President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on JoyPrime on Saturday, October 18, 2025, Mr. Ghanamannti — who is also a lawyer — confirmed that he has filed the petition under Article 69 of Ghana’s Constitution, which outlines the process for removing a sitting president.
According to him, President Mahama has failed to deliver on his promise to end illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, and has instead deceived Ghanaians for political gain.
“In the 2024 election, I made it clear that when we come to power, galamsey would be stopped because all licences would be revoked. But the NDC capitalised on public anger over galamsey to gain power, and now they are doing the same thing,” he argued.
Mr. Ghanamannti further alleged that government-backed entities, including the Ghana Gold Board, are indirectly supporting illegal mining by purchasing gold from unregulated sources.
“For both the NDC and NPP, galamsey continues because they benefit from it. That is why I have initiated the highest form of accountability — invoking Article 69 to impeach the president. I have already submitted the petition, and it is up to the Speaker of Parliament to act on it,” he stated.
