Minority Came to Vetting with a Script, Not Questions – Shaibu Mahama

Daboya-Mankarigu MP, Shaibu Mahama, has accused the Minority in Parliament of attending the vetting of the next Chief Justice with a premeditated agenda rather than a genuine intent to engage or seek clarity.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, November 10, Mr. Mahama claimed the Minority’s conduct made it clear they were more focused on executing a plan than participating meaningfully in the process.

“Clearly, the Minority came not to ask questions, but with a script,” he stated. “Unfortunately, they couldn’t even mark the script.”

Defending the Majority Leader’s actions during the heated session, Mr. Mahama insisted that every decision taken by the Majority followed Parliamentary rules and procedures.

“Every single act that the Majority Leader did was in line with the standing orders and regulations that govern the House,” he explained.

He further noted that the Appointments Committee functions as an extension of Parliament, meaning the same procedural rules apply. Therefore, he argued, the Majority Leader was right to object when the Minority breached parliamentary protocol.

“If you raise issues that offend the rules, the Majority Leader has every right to object,” he emphasized.

Mr. Mahama alleged that the Minority’s actions showed a lack of preparation and sincerity.

“They did not come ready to contribute. Initially, they announced they wouldn’t even attend the vetting — yet they showed up with a script. Sadly, that script didn’t work.”

The comments come after dramatic scenes at Monday’s vetting of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, President Mahama’s nominee for Chief Justice.

The Minority Caucus staged a walkout following a heated exchange between Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, prompting a temporary suspension of proceedings. When the session resumed, the Minority refused to participate, leaving the vetting to be completed by the Majority members alone.

Mr. Mahama maintained that the process was handled properly by the Majority and that the Minority’s walkout was motivated more by political theatre than principle.
