Legal Green Association hails Mahama’s bold UN stand on Gaza crisis

The Legal Green Association of Ghana (LGA), a progressive group of law students, has applauded President John Dramani Mahama for what it described as a courageous and principled address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

In a statement on Friday, the LGA said President Mahama distinguished himself by “speaking truth to power” at a time when many world leaders have chosen silence in the face of injustice.

Quoting his remark — “The crimes in Gaza must stop. It doesn’t matter what you call it: if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, well then… it must be a duck” — the Association said his words will “echo for generations” as a fearless indictment of global inaction.

The group emphasized that Ghana, with its historic commitment to liberation struggles, Pan-African solidarity, and world peace, cannot afford to be a “mute spectator to genocide, regardless of which global power is behind it.”

While noting minority concerns over Ghana’s tradition of neutrality in international conflicts, the Association argued that neutrality must not translate into silence in the face of mass atrocities.

“Speaking out strengthens Ghana’s moral authority, as long as it reflects our commitment to peace and international law,” the statement stressed.

The LGA also commended former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for his balanced commentary, describing him as mature in recognizing President Mahama’s global leadership while addressing local challenges constructively.

Warning against “fence-sitters and apologists for colonial masters,” the group urged civil society, religious leaders, academia, and citizens of conscience worldwide to amplify the call that “the crimes in Gaza must stop.”

“We are proud of a leader who dares to speak when others remain silent, who stands firm when others falter, and who holds the powerful accountable,” the statement concluded. “President Mahama did not just represent Ghana; he represented humanity.”
