Journalism is not a crime: End the attacks now

On August 5, 2025, JoyNews reporter Carlos Calony and his cameraman, covering a warehouse dispute on Spintex Road, were brutally attacked, arrested, and detained by a soldier, turning journalists into the story, per MyJoyOnline. This assault highlights a growing crisis: at least 12 Ghanaian journalists faced attacks this year, including Latiff Iddrisu and Kwabena Banahene, with impunity shielding perpetrators, as reported by Ghana News Agency.

Journalism, a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy, is not a crime but a sacred duty to inform and empower, enshrined in the constitution. Yet, violence against journalists like Calony threatens press freedom, silencing vital stories and eroding public access to truth. The Ghana journalist assault crisis demands urgent action to protect media and ensure accountability.
