A 26-year-old farmer, Kwame Alugu, also known as Jansarah, has been remanded into prison custody by the Nkawie Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, Ashanti Region, for allegedly stealing ginger worth GH¢2,000 at Gyankobaa near Nkawie.
Alugu pleaded not guilty to the charge and is scheduled to reappear before the court, presided over by Robert Addo, on August 22.
Prosecution’s Case
Police Detective Chief Inspector Ntim Boadu told the court that the complainant, Regina Agyei, owns a ginger farm in Gyankobaa, where the accused resides.
On May 26, 2024, at about 3:00 pm, the complainant visited her farm and found Alugu harvesting ginger. He had already filled half a bag, valued at GH¢2,000.
According to the prosecution, the complainant persuaded Alugu to carry the ginger home so they could sell it together and share the proceeds. He agreed, but while they were on the way, the complainant called someone and began narrating the incident. Sensing trouble, Alugu allegedly fled with the ginger.
A report was filed with the Toase Police.
On August 6, 2024, Alugu was arrested in connection with another theft case. During this time, the complainant identified him as the person who had stolen her ginger.
In his caution statement, Alugu admitted selling the ginger to someone in Gyankobaa but refused to disclose the buyer’s identity.
After investigations, he was charged and arraigned before the court.
