The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, announced the decision during the 2026 World Ocean Day celebration held at Atuabo in the Ellembelle District.

According to the Minister, the designation grants the internationally recognised wetland enhanced protection and underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s coastal and marine ecosystems.

“The protection of our oceans and wetlands is a shared responsibility. The government alone cannot do it. We need the active participation of local communities, development partners, the private sector, students, and all stakeholders to preserve these critical ecosystems for future generations,” Mr. Buah stated.

He called on Ghanaians to use the occasion of World Ocean Day to renew their commitment to environmental stewardship, stressing that economic development must be pursued in a sustainable manner.

As part of measures to preserve the wetland, the Minister revealed that he has directed the Minerals Commission and other regulatory agencies to revise their operational maps to reflect the new protected status of the area.

“I have instructed the Minerals Commission and all relevant agencies to redesignate the Amanzule Wetlands as a protected zone. No mining activity will be permitted within the wetlands,” he declared.

Mr. Buah noted that the move forms part of broader government efforts to halt environmental degradation and preserve biodiversity in one of Ghana’s most important wetland ecosystems.

The Amanzule Wetlands, located within the coastal belt of the Western Region, are widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most important ecological landscapes, supporting rich biodiversity and serving as a critical habitat for numerous plant and animal species.

WAMCO Two, which accounts for half of the company’s total capacity with 30,000 metric tons, has been rendered non-operational due to technical challenges and the shortage of raw cocoa beans.

Currently, only WAMCO One remains operational, but even that facility is running at just 30 percent of its 30,000 metric ton capacity because of an inadequate supply of cocoa beans.

Managing Director of WAMCO, Frank Bednar, welcomed the government’s 50 percent cocoa retention policy, describing it as a major step toward strengthening Ghana’s cocoa processing industry.

He noted that increasing local value addition to cocoa remains the most effective way for the country to boost export revenue while creating employment opportunities.

Dr. Boakye Danquah further appealed for an investment of between five and seven million dollars to fully rehabilitate WAMCO Two.

According to him, revamping the facility would significantly enhance production capacity and contribute to the economic revival of the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis.

 MlHe added that the project could also secure more than 200 direct jobs once the plant becomes fully operational.

In response, Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson assured the company of government’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring WAMCO’s full operational capacity.

He indicated that government recognises the strategic importance of cocoa processing to the national economy and will work with relevant stakeholders to ensure the sector remains competitive and sustainable.

With a capacity to employ 120 workers, the hospital currently operates with just 45 nurses. This stark difference reveals how far the hospital is from achieving its full potential.

Dr. Zachariah Musah, the Medical Superintendent, recently informed Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson about the difficulties they are encountering.
