Bawumia Gains Massive Backing as NPP Flagbearer Race Heats Up

With nominations now officially open for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 flagbearer contest, one contender is rapidly emerging as the clear favourite — former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Over 200,000 NPP delegates, spanning polling station executives to top party leadership, will decide who leads the party into the 2028 general elections. Early indications suggest that most influential blocs are lining up behind Dr. Bawumia.

One of the most critical power bases, the party’s parliamentary caucus of 88 members, appears to be firmly in his corner. Sources reveal that about 62 NPP Members of Parliament are backing Dr. Bawumia, compared to eight for former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and seven for Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong. Nine MPs remain undecided.

Beyond Parliament, Dr. Bawumia commands strong support from over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who publicly endorsed him in July. He is also backed by a majority of the party’s regional and constituency executives.

Perhaps most telling is the overwhelming endorsement from the grassroots. In keeping with the NPP’s post-1996 tradition of retaining its previous presidential candidate, nearly 490 of the party’s 552 youth organisers — key drivers of mobilisation across all 275 constituencies — declared their support for Dr. Bawumia on August 12.

According to a senior party insider, while the race remains competitive, all signs point to major party blocs eventually consolidating behind Dr. Bawumia.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong have already collected their nomination forms, with Dr. Bawumia expected to follow suit soon.
