General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has expressed confidence that his party will emerge victorious in the Akwatia by-election despite the New Patriotic Party (NPP) being considered favourites.
Speaking to the media during the polls on Tuesday, September 2, Mr. Kwetey acknowledged that the NPP’s incumbency naturally makes them the frontrunners.
“I would say the NPP were clearly holding the seat, so naturally, right from the beginning, they will be considered the favourites. But just as we did in the December 7 elections, where the NPP were tipped to win but we beat them convincingly, I believe the same thing will happen here,” he said.
Mr. Kwetey was optimistic that by the close of polls, the NDC would reclaim the Akwatia seat.
“Akwatia will be green before we leave here today,” he confidently declared.
The NDC General Secretary also dismissed claims that the NPP’s withdrawal from the Tamale Central by-election was in good faith. According to him, the opposition party pulled out simply because it stood no chance of winning.
“The truth is that the NPP knows they have no chance in Tamale Central. They can bring Bawumia, but he will lose miserably there. Their explanation was just a cover-up for their weak standing,” he argued.
He stressed that while the NPP’s decision in Tamale Central was a strategic move, the situation in Akwatia was entirely different.
“Akwatia is a constituency we believed we won on December 7, but it was declared for the NPP. We see this by-election as an opportunity for the people of Akwatia to make a clear and final choice between the NDC and the NPP,” Mr. Kwetey added.
