Ablekuma North Victory Gives NDC Two-Thirds Majority in Parliament – Mahama Ayariga

Ghana’s Parliament has tipped decisively in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), following the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North. The addition of her seat gives the NDC a commanding two-thirds majority in the 275-member chamber.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed the development during a short address after overseeing the official oath-taking on Tuesday, July 22. He emphasized that this new parliamentary strength positions the NDC to lead bold national reforms.

“The National Democratic Congress, for the first time in a long while, has two-thirds in this House,” Mr. Ayariga declared. “With this number, we can do many good things for this country—implement significant constitutional reforms, and pursue the transformation that Ghanaians are yearning for.”

The NDC now holds 184 seats, supplemented by four independent Members of Parliament, while the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds 86. This gives the ruling party not only a numerical advantage but also a strategic edge to shape Ghana’s legislative future.

Mr. Ayariga echoed President John Dramani Mahama’s earlier pledge to govern with humility and responsibility, assuring the public that the majority will not be abused.

“President Mahama made it clear during his swearing-in, and I repeat it here: the NDC will not abuse the majority entrusted to us. We will use it wisely and in the interest of all Ghanaians.”

Ewurabena Aubynn’s victory came through a rerun held in 19 polling stations across Ablekuma North, following a closely contested election. Her win is seen not just as a personal triumph but as a critical step in strengthening the NDC’s parliamentary dominance.

With the two-thirds majority now secured, the NDC is expected to push forward key constitutional amendments and legislative reforms aimed at modernizing governance and enhancing democratic accountability.
